Celebrating International Day of Women and Girls in Science

International Day of Women and Girls in Science, observed on February 11, celebrates the contributions of women scientists and seeks to inspire girls into the field. From classrooms to labs to innovation hubs around the world, girls are showing up with creativity, curiosity, and leadership. We spoke with our Brand Ambassadors about how science inspires them.

Belen from Girls Inc. of San Diego, shared, “What excites me most about the STEM field is being able to use my scientific knowledge to make discoveries. I am especially fascinated by the opportunities to use these discoveries to help others in need, especially when it comes to scientific research and medicine. As a first-generation Latina student, one challenge that I have faced was noticing the underrepresentation of women of color in the STEM field and building the confidence to pursue a career in such a rigorous field. I found that speaking with women who are currently in the field has shaped my understanding of what it means to make a difference through science and taught me to be confident in any work environment that I step foot in. Being in mentorship programs introduced to me by Girls Inc. has given me the opportunity to picture myself in the field, learn more about careers in science, and overall build the motivation I need to take on my education with both confidence and purpose. Although there is still underrepresentation in the field, Girls Inc. has taught me that being smart, strong, and bold means I must take risks in learning challenging things.”

Leila from Girls Inc. of Greater Indianapolis, reflects on her inspiration, Mae Jemison: “Mae Jemison is often regarded as a legend, and rightfully so. As a chemical engineer, medical doctor, Peace Corps medical officer, first Black woman astronaut, and so much more, her legacy is well known. However, hearing her reflect on this journey live and in person as my university’s Black History Month keynote brought a new depth to her story. What stood out most from hearing her speak wasn’t just her accomplishments, but her focus on persevering in environments that are not built for you to succeed. I deeply resonated with her emphasis on finding your “source”: something that brings you joy, motivation, and self-assurance during times of adversity. For her, that source was dance; for me, that source has been Girls Inc.

The discovery and creative problem-solving in science have always excited me; however, like Jemison, I have faced moments of doubt, questioning whether I truly belong in this field. Fortunately, my strength and confidence have been continually bolstered by my experiences with Girls Inc. Through their programs, I have learned to take risks, trust my abilities, persist through challenges, and know that I can and will contribute positive change to the world around me. That sense of purpose has ultimately led me to pursue a major in biological engineering, driven by the opportunity to serve my community. Girls Inc. has also given me the platform to contribute beyond my future career by encouraging girls like me to explore STEM, helping to carry forward the cycle of inspiration begun by leaders such as Mae Jemison.”

Thank you to our Brand Ambassadors for continuing to remind us of the importance of seeing women represented in all fields. We invite you to celebrate International Day of Women and Girls in Science with us by supporting girls who are showing up strong, smart, and bold in advancing the field!
