Honoring Black History, Amplifying Black Voices: Leaders Who Inspire Us
This February we honor Black History Month, celebrating the contributions, achievements, and history of African Americans. Brand Ambassadors, Lauren and Aisha share Black leaders that have encouraged and inspired them.
“Shirley Chisholm is an African American leader and activist who inspires me because of her courage and determination to challenge barriers,” Lauren, our Brand Ambassador from Girls Inc. of Columbus & Phenix Russell, writes. “She was the first Black woman elected to the U.S. Congress and the first Black candidate to seek a major party’s nomination for president. She refused to accept limitations placed on her because of her race or gender, but instead used her platform to fight for education, and to create pathways to opportunities. One of my favorite quotes of hers is, “If they don’t give you a seat at the table, bring a folding chair.” This resonates with me because it reminds me that change often comes from boldness and self-belief. Shirley Chisholm’s story inspires me to continue pushing forward even when doors seem closed and pursue my goals fearlessly. Her leadership proves that one person’s determination can open pathways for others and leave a lasting impact on future generations.”
Aisha, our Brand Ambassador from Girls Inc. of Greater Miami, writes, “Kendrick Lamar inspires me because his artistry is deeper than entertainment. He taps into raw emotion, history, and real life. Growing up in Compton, he experienced violence and struggle, yet he didn’t try to fall into the statistic. He changed the narrative by creating stories that make people feel seen and heard. His music shows that pain can be turned into purpose, and that really moves me. His lyrics remind people that real change happens through action, not just watching from the sidelines.
Thank you to our Brand Ambassadors for sharing what Black History Month means to them and how these figures such as Shirley Chisholm and Kendrick Lamar continue to inspire them well beyond this month.
