How Youth-led Civic Engagement Prepares Future Voters

At Girls Inc. we know that when equipped with the right resources, girls are prepared to lead and contribute meaningfully to their communities. While many of the girls we serve are not yet old enough to vote, encouraging them to get involved in their local elections and communities can begin fostering a lifelong habit of civic engagement. Through volunteer opportunities, civics education, advocacy experiences, and discussing issues that matter to them,  girls gain the confidence and skills needed to make their voices heard and improve their communities. They learn how to collaborate with people from different backgrounds, work toward common goals, and create meaningful change.

By teaching civic engagement at a young age, children are able to see themselves as active participants of society. It builds their understanding of how society works, how decisions are made, and how individuals can contribute to the public good. Civic education also fosters empathy, critical thinking, and a sense of responsibility towards others. Early education about civic engagement methods increases political participation when youth reach voting age.

Discussions about current events and public policy provide youth with opportunities to develop essential skills for civil discourse. These conversations help young people learn how to respectfully engage with differing viewpoints, evaluate information critically, communicate their perspectives effectively, and participate in constructive dialogue. These skills are vital for building strong communities and a healthy democracy.

How youth can engage in elections:

  • Learn about voter registration requirements and, if permitted in your state, complete pre-registration before turning 18
  • Practice civil discourse by discussing current events and policies with family and friends
  • Write a letter or email to your local, state, or federal representative about an issue you care about
  • Attend a local campaign event, city council meeting, school board meeting, to learn how decisions are made
  • Volunteer for a community organization benefiting a cause you’re passionate about

By promoting civic engagement today, we help cultivate the informed, compassionate, and active leaders who will shape our communities tomorrow.
