Celebrating National Volunteer Week: Recognizing the Importance of Volunteering
National Volunteer Week, April 19-25, recognizes the contributions of those who give their time and treasure to strengthen and uplift their community. To celebrate, Girls Inc. Brand Ambassadors reflect on volunteering experiences that have been meaningful to them and how they have shaped their perspectives on community, leadership, and giving back.
“As a member of the poetry club at my university, I understand how uplifting it feels to express yourself through heartfelt poems and share them with supportive peers,” says Lauren, a Brand Ambassador from Girls Inc. of Columbus & Phenix Russell. “This inspired me to seek opportunities where I could help others experience this same feeling. As a result, I began volunteering with the Poetry Club at a local middle school. Many of these students had great ideas for poems but needed help getting them on paper, and that’s what I helped them do. By the end of our sessions, they were confidently sharing their feelings and stories through creatively crafted poems. These moments strengthened their public skills and stage presence. This experience helped me realize the importance of sharing your passion with others. In this case, volunteering helped build confidence in these kids’ poetic ability allowing them to realize their full potential.”
Belen, a Brand Ambassador from Girls Inc. San Diego, states, “One of my favorite volunteer experiences has been serving with the children’s ministry at my church. I enjoy working with kids and contributing to a meaningful community that strives to inspire young children. Working with kids in this capacity motivated me to go into pediatrics in the future. Not only did I learn more about myself through volunteering, but I was also able to learn more about the perspectives of my community and children within it. I grew as both a leader and a person, realizing how giving back can contribute meaningfully to the lives of others.”
Aisha, a Brand Ambassador from Girls Inc. of Greater Miami, writes about her experience volunteering at the Orange Blossom Classic, a historic football game between Historically Black Colleges and Universities that takes place every year on Labor Day weekend, “Volunteering at the Orange Blossom Classic was a meaningful experience for me because it showed me how important teamwork and service are in bringing a large community event together. I was inspired to get involved because I want to support something that celebrates culture, education, and connection. During the event, I helped with preparation, check-in, and giving direction to guests, which allowed me to interact with many different people and make sure things ran smoothly. This experience helped me grow more confident communicating with others and taking responsibility in a leadership role. It also shaped my perspective on giving back by showing how even small actions can make a big difference. Like Girls Inc.’s mission, volunteering reminded me that supporting your community helps create opportunities for others to feel welcomed.”
Shreya, a Brand Ambassador from Girls Inc. of the Greater Capital Region, reflects on her non-profit: “One of the most meaningful volunteer experiences for me has been building GleeBoxx, something that started as a small idea and slowly turned into a way to support people in my community. I created GleeBoxx after realizing how often we overlook basic essentials that can bring comfort and dignity—things like hygiene products and small self-care items. Putting each box together feels personal, knowing it will go to someone who needs it and that it can make their day a little easier. This experience has taught me that volunteering is about connection, not just giving. It has shaped how I view leadership, showing me that real impact comes from consistency and care. Girls Inc. has encouraged me to take initiative and lead with purpose. I encourage others to get involved in any way they can—because even small acts of service can create meaningful change in someone’s life.”
