I am strong because I can lift my own weight. I am smart not just because I get As. I am bold because I am not afraid to stick up for my rights.
New York, NY (March 7, 2011) — On Tuesday, March 8, Girls Inc. of Lynn in Massachusetts will welcome Gil Kerlikowske, Director of National Drug Control Policy, for a roundtable discussion with girls about their community work and experiences preventing drug abuse.
The girls, who attend after school programming at Girls Inc. of Lynn, will present what they have learned about preventing drug use and dealing with peer pressure, along with their stories, challenges, and successes in staying healthy. They will also share their experiences as peer educators who initiate community-based change and mentor local youth in avoiding substance use.
The Obama Administration's National Drug Control Strategy, released in 2010 and soon to be updated in 2011, places unprecedented emphasis on reducing the public health effects of drug use and its consequences. Mr. Kerlikowske chose to visit Girls Inc. of Lynn in order to see an example of a program helping America win the future by preventing drug use before it starts.
