Girls Inc.: Inspiring all girls to be strong, smart and bold.

I am strong because I can lift my own weight. I am smart not just because I get As. I am bold because I am not afraid to stick up for my rights.

Girls Inc. to Hold 58th Biennial National Conference in April

Girls Inc. is a network of over 90 local organizations in the United States and Canada. Each Girls Inc. affiliate—an independent charitable organization—strives to inspire the girls in its community to be strong, smart, and bold. Once every two years, the staff and board of the entire Girls Inc. network gather for a national conference to discuss important issues affecting girls, vote on major initiatives, and share their expertise.

In April 2010, the Girls Inc. 58th Biennial National Conference will convene in Washington, D.C., where staff and board members will be inspired by speakers ranging from national experts on girls to many Girls Inc. alumnae. Scheduled to present, among a roster of accomplished women, are Christina M. Tchen, Director of the White House Office of Public Engagement; Russlynn Ali, Assistant Secretary for Civil Rights at the U.S. Department of Education; Ella L.J. Edmondson Bell, Ph.D., a leading expert in the management of race, gender, and class in the workplace; and international scholar on curriculum and instruction Anastasia P. Samaras. An important part of the conference will be Hill Day, when Girls Inc. representatives from across the nation will visit their Members of Congress to talk about issues of importance to girls and young women. The theme for the 2010 conference—taken from a quote by Edith B. Phelps, former CEO for Girls Incorporated—is “Inspired for Life: To become somebody you never expected, but someone else did.”

The Girls Inc. National Conferences are an important part of our governance processes. Girls Inc., like many other national federated organizations (organizations with local affiliates), uses a dual governance structure: the National Council and the National Board.
