Q: Besides the dancing, what was your favorite thing about being MADE?
A: It started off not being one of my favorite things, I'll be honest. The producer wanted Cedric to get me more involved in the hip-hop community and everything about hip-hop. So he came over one night and we're on my porch drinking milk and he said, "Alright, we're going to rap about this milk." I was very unsuccessful and did not take naturally to rapping. So he gave me an assignment that I had to write a rap.
Q: What was your rap about?
A: I wrote a rap about the Red Sox, and how the Yankees are bad. Cedric liked it because he wanted me to write about something I felt passionate about. For the next assignment, I had to rap for five people. Then I even rapped for my English class! I'm not sure why, but that footage didn't make it into the show.
Q: During the five weeks, Cedric was preparing you for dance tryouts at school. What finally happened?
A: Tryouts were held on a Friday afternoon and Cedric came. Some of my friends came to watch and wish me good luck. The first part was choreography, and it took me a while to learn the thing. That was a little rough.
Q: How did the rest of the tryout go?
A: The freestyle part was next, which I did really well on. It was built up in the show that I needed to let myself out and be more extroverted in order to do a good freestyle. This time I was able to let loose. And you can see Cedric's reaction-- he's so excited to see me dance. The producer told me she wanted to cry but she couldn't because she was holding the camera. It was a big deal that I was able to dance and bust out.
Q: So you made the team?
A: Yep. The next Friday we had a pep rally, which was the sort of unveiling of my dancing to the school. In the show, they set it up like, "Well, you made the team," and they have a shot of me from bottom to top in my new hip-hop gear. It's funny. Then I danced and everyone was so excited because no one had seen me dance.
Q: How did your parents react?
A: They thought it was a lot of fun. They were very excited.
Q: Has this experience changed your life?
A: Yes, it definitely has. It's something that not many people get to experience, so I'm just really happy that I had this opportunity. I met so many amazing people that I never would have met before, like Cedric, my coach. I'm really close with him now and he's very supportive. And now I'm on the dance team, and I'm friends with all those people.
