When I wake up I see someone who is willing to do anything to achieve my dream.
Imagine for a moment you're a girl. You may be accustomed to being overlooked and ignored, but
now you enter a place where your thoughts, opinions and contributions make a difference. You
learn about car engines, power drills and saws. You gain confidence as you learn new skills and
develop your talents. You play basketball without worrying what the boys will say if you shoot
an air ball. You find that it's fun to get dirty, it's okay to make mistakes. You meet adults
who listen to you, take you seriously and don't patronize you. You learn to be assertive, to
stand up for your beliefs. You have a place to call your own.
This place might be a Girls Incorporated center. But the location can also be a classroom that every Wednesday afternoon becomes Girls Incorporated. The site can be a gym, a YWCA, a church basement or a rec room in a housing project. Girls Incorporated can be created anywhere girls are found. It is an environment that helps girls recognize and realize all of their potential--without the constraints of traditional stereotypes and with the information and opportunities to find and reach goals.
